Las Vegas Hit-and-Run Driver Strikes Pregnant Woman

The Las Vegas Police Department is once again sad to report that another hit-and-run accident, likely fueled by alcohol, occurred in early November. This accident was particularly devastating because a car struck a pedestrian who happened to be pregnant at the time of the crash. Both the woman and the baby are currently in critical condition at the hospital.

According to initial reports, on Thursday November 3rd at around 9:30 PM, a 2010 Toyota Camry was traveling along S. Nellis Blvd. The pregnant woman reportedly entered the road on a marked crosswalk and attempted to cross the street. The car apparently struck the woman before fleeing away.

A few minutes later, the vehicle returned to the scene of the accident. The driver briefly spoke with authorities and claimed that her boyfriend was actually driving the vehicle previously when the accident occurred. She also told police where her boyfriend was.

Authorities visited the residence and found 37-year-old Oscar Pena intoxicated. He was taken into custody and charged with both a DUI and a hit-and-run. The entire crash is still currently under investigation.

Seeking Out a Claim is Often Worth it

Sadly for the pregnant victim, the extent of her and her child’s injuries are not yet clear. In these types of situations, it’s often worth it to seek out a lawsuit. Not only did the driver reportedly drive while under the influence, but they also fled the scene, which could’ve prolonged the emergency team’s response time. The victim will likely endure significant losses in the form of:

  • Medical bills
  • Future medical bills
  • Potential birth complications
  • Potential life-long injuries or disabilities for the child
  • Loss of income
  • Pain and suffering

Unfortunately, the whole extent of the situation might not be apparent until after the victim gives birth and the child is evaluated by a medical doctor. In the best case scenario, the baby will live a healthy life, but in a less desirable case, the child could wind up suffering life-long complications. It will be difficult to tell until the baby is born, which will likely increase the emotional stress on the mother during this challenging time.

Are You Considering Seeking out a Claim?

Have you or a loved one recently experienced a serious accident with significant losses? If so, then it might be in your best interests to hire a qualified personal injury lawyer who can help you decide how to move forward.

In many cases, the injured party is able to seek out compensation for the losses they’ve endured. All of the losses outlined above are recoverable in a court of law if you can prove negligence on the part of the driver. A good lawyer can help you not only prove your claims and losses but also negotiate with the other party, too.
