New Airbag Jeans, Vests, Jackets May Help Save Motorcyclists’ Lives

Mar 27, 2023

Motorcycling is a popular leisure activity and means of transportation for thousands of California residents. As of 2021, California reported the largest number of registered motorcycles with 858,900, according to the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Rounding out the top 10 states with the largest number of registered motorcycles were:

  • Florida: 591,127
  • Texas: 438,375
  • Ohio: 402,264
  • Pennsylvania: 358,909
  • New York: 340,760
  • North Carolina: 308,776
  • Michigan: 297,684
  • Illinois: 288,813
  • Georgia: 263,320

As motorcycling has grown in interest across the country, the number of motorcycle-related accidents has also increased substantially. Unfortunately, when motorcycle accidents occur, riders can suffer severe and even catastrophic injuries.

World’s First Motorcycle Airbag Jean Could Save Lives and Reduce Injuries

U.S. Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirms that 82,000 motorcycle accident injuries were recorded in the United States in 2020 (a slight decrease from the 84,000 injuries reported in 2019).

Additionally, the NHTSA confirms that 4,963 motorcycle accident deaths occurred in the United States in 2020. This represents a slight decrease from the 5,014 deaths reported in 2019.

California Motorcycle Accident Statistics

U.S. Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Here in the Golden State, the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), confirmed 13,565 motorcycle accident injuries in 2020 (a slight decrease from the 13,703 injuries reported in 2019). That same year, California confirmed 467 motorcycle accident deaths (down slightly from the 476 fatalities recorded in 2019).

Given the inherent dangers that come with motorcycling, companies have been working to develop a range of safety features and equipment. In the sections below, we will take a look at one of the most recent innovations designed to reduce motorcycle accident injuries and fatalities – airbag jeans – and review some other notable safety advancements. We’ll also provide information on how to file a motorcycle accident injury claim for financial compensation with the experienced attorneys at Dordulian Law Group.

Swedish Company Designs ‘Airbag Jeans’ for Motorcyclists

In what is being called a first-of-its-kind, Swedish design company Mo’cycle has released a pair of airbag jeans made for motorcyclists. Constructed using Armalith denim – a single-layer fabric that resembles regular denim – the airbag jeans are designed for handling abrasive surfaces and forces using a CO2 system. The New York Post reported that a cartridge installed inside the jeans releases the gas as the rider is thrown off the bike during an accident.

According to the company, inserting the airbags represents a “game-changer for safety” and the feature makes the jeans 10 times better at absorbing impact energy compared to traditional pads.

How Do Motorcycle Airbag Jeans Work?

According to Mo’cycle, the jeans are tethered to the biker’s seat, and the airbag within the garments is activated if the connection between the motorcyclist and motorcycle is broken. Within “milliseconds,” the jeans inflate, according to the company’s website.

The trigger mechanism is a tether connecting the jeans to the motorcycle and works as a dead man’s switch,” the company wrote in a press release. “The airbag covers new areas on the lower body, areas previously unprotected from impact hits, such as the thighs, the rear part of the body, and especially the tailbone!”

The motorcycle airbag pants are completely reusable, according to the company website, and the CO2 cartridge can be replaced after it’s been used in the event of an accident. Additionally, the motorcycle jeans are machine washable by simply removing the airbag components.

Mo’cycle released the product to the U.S. market earlier this year on February 28. The website says those interested in buying the airbag jeans can secure an exclusive discount through its crowdfunding platform, Indiegogo. Mo’cycle’s airbag jeans currently cost $499 and delivery is expected to begin in summer 2023.

The NHTSA confirms that when accidents happen, motorcycle riders most commonly sustain injuries to their lower body parts. In fact, the organization notes that bone fractures in the legs tend to occur most frequently when a motorcyclist experiences a collision.

“Most injuries occur on the lower body in a serious motorcycle accident, so for 17 years I’ve been trying to solve this problem,” founder and designer Moses Shahrivar said to the Daily Mail.

“The only impact protection you have in regular motorcycle jeans is basically the knee protectors and sometimes you get hip protectors,” he added, noting that, “What the airbag did for cars is about to happen to us motorcycle riders.”

New Technology and Products Aim to Increase Motorcycle Safety

Traditional motorcycle safety equipment such as helmets, jackets, gloves, pants, chaps, boots, and body armor has been around and utilized by motorcyclists for some time. However, many new equipment advancements may become staples for motorcycle enthusiasts.

Mo’cycle has also engineered similar airbag products intended to reduce motorcycle accident injuries and fatalities. Some of those include:

  • Airbag Vests
  • Airbag Outfits

Additionally, a company called Revzilla offers a line of motorcycle airbag jackets, vests, and race suits.

With clothing that will be worn by a motorcyclist, there are typically two types of airbag technology systems available:

  1. Integrated Airbag System: Built into a specially designed jacket, vest, and now even jeans, integrated airbag systems are triggered by a tether that connects to the motorcycle. When the rider is separated from the bike during an accident, the tether triggers the airbag to inflate and protect the rider.
  2. Standalone Airbag System: Worn separately from the rider’s jacket or vest, these systems can be attached to any riding gear. They are typically triggered by sensors that detect sudden deceleration, indicating a crash.

While motorcycle airbag clothing is likely to reduce injures by providing additional protection to riders – particularly during high-speed crashes where the rider is thrown from the bike – it’s important to keep in mind that these systems are not entirely foolproof. Newly advanced and designed motorcycle airbag jeans, vests, and jackets should be used in conjunction with other traditional safety gear, such as helmets, gloves, and boots.

Honda Patents ‘Crotch-Firing, Torso-Hugging’ Detachable Motorcycle Airbag

NewAtlas.com reported that Honda has patented a new type of motorcycle airbag system. In the event of a crash or fall situation, the airbag would rapidly inflate, wrap around the rider’s torso in a “great big hug,” and then detach from the bike to protect the rider when the two are separated.

The article notes that although the motorcycle market seems to have shifted more toward airbag-equipped riding gear, equipment like inflatable vests, jeans, and jackets all require an active choice on the rider’s part.

“Honda still thinks there’s promise in the idea of bike-mounted systems that’ll work whatever you happen to be wearing that day, and its engineers are apparently continuing to file patents for novel ways to get the job done,” NewAtlas.com reported.
